What is paint protection film (PPF)?

Paint protection film is a transparent polyurethane film applied to vehicle’s panels to protect the surface from everyday damage. It forms an invisible barrier against stone chips, scratches, road debris, and environmental contaminants while preserving the original factory paint.

Our films are available in three performance tiers:

What does paint protection film protect against?

Paint protection film helps protect your vehicle’s paint from common driving hazards such as:

Stone chips and road debris
Light scratches and swirl marks
Bird droppings, bug splatter, and road contaminants
UV exposure that can cause fading of your vehicle paint

All our films include self-healing topcoat technology, allowing light scratches to fade when exposed to heat (e.g., sunlight or a heat gun).

What is paint protection film made from?

Our paint protection films are made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a flexible and durable material engineered specifically for automotive paint protection.

The film consists of multiple layers, including a self-healing topcoat, an impact-absorbing polyurethane layer, and a paint-safe adhesive that ensures a secure bond between the film and the surface.

Is paint protection film visible after installation?

When professionally installed, clear paint protection film is virtually invisible. All of our clear PPF films have high optical clarity, allowing the original paint color to remain unchanged while enhancing gloss and adding a protective layer.

How long does paint protection film last and how do you maintain it?

The lifespan of paint protection film depends on the film type and environment.

Ultra: up to 10 years of outdoor durability
Shield: up to 7 years of outdoor durability
Guard: up to 5 years of outdoor durability

Maintaining PPF is simple: wash regularly with standard car shampoo, avoid abrasive brushes, and dry with microfiber towels. When using a pressure washer, avoid directing strong water pressure at the film edges for extended periods, as small amounts of water could work underneath the film and create bubbles.

Is paint protection film better than ceramic coating?

Paint protection film and ceramic coating serve different purposes.

PPF is a thick protective film that helps prevent stone chips, scratches, and road damage, while ceramic coating is a liquid layer that improves water repellency, but does not protect against impacts and does not self-heal. In other words, if protecting your paint against small scratches and stone chips is a priority, PPF is the more protective option compared with ceramic coating.

How is paint protection film installed?

Paint protection film is typically installed using a wet application method, although certain situations may benefit from wax-based or dry application processes.

A slip solution is applied to the surface and the film adhesive, allowing the installer to position the film before using a squeegee to remove the solution and activate the adhesive, bonding the film to the panel.

Professional installers generally use one of two installation approaches:

Bulk installation
A larger sheet of paint protection film is applied to the panel and trimmed with a knife directly on the surface. This allows edge wrapping and a fit customized to the panel but requires precise cutting.

Pre-cut pattern installation
Digital templates are used to cut film panels specifically designed for the exact model being serviced. Using a pattern software such as ArlonCutPilot, installers can cut panels with high accuracy, reduce trimming on the surface, and improve installation efficiency. The software also optimizes material usage to minimize the amount of film required for each job.

Many professional installers choose pattern-based installation for greater speed, consistency, and safety, although the preferred method ultimately depends on each installer’s workflow and experience.
