## FAQ
What is colour paint protection film (PPF)?
−
Colour paint protection film is a durable polyurethane film applied to a vehicle’s panels to both protect the surface and change its appearance. It combines the impact resistance and durability of traditional paint protection film while allowing you to personalize your vehicle with different colours or finishes.
The film creates a protective layer that helps defend against everyday driving hazards such as stone chips, scratches, and road debris while enhancing the overall appearance of the surface.
Arlon Colour Protection Film is available in over 100 colours and finishes, giving owners the freedom to protect their paint while creating a completely new style.
How is colour paint protection film different from clear paint protection film?
\+
Clear paint protection film is designed to protect the vehicle while keeping the OEM colour completely visible.
On the other hand, while colour paint protection film provides the same protective benefits, it will completely change the appearance of the vehicle. This allows owners to combine paint protection and colour customization in a single installation.
How is colour paint protection film different from a vinyl wrap?
\+
Colour paint protection film and vinyl wraps can both change the appearance of a vehicle, but they provide different levels of protection. Colour PPF is thicker and more durable, helping protect against stone chips, scratches, and road debris, and features self-healing properties. Vinyl wrap is a thinner PVC film designed mainly for visual customization and offers limited to no protection against impacts or paint damage.
What colours and finishes are available?
\+
Colour paint protection film is available in a wide range of colours and finishes designed to transform a vehicle’s appearance.
Popular options include:
- High-gloss colours
- Satin and matte finishes
- Metallic colours
- Frozen or stealth-style effects
- Patterned finishes such as carbon fibre
Arlon Colour Protection Film offers more than 100 colour and finish options, giving installers and vehicle owners the flexibility to create unique designs while maintaining paint protection.
Does colour paint protection film protect the paint the same way as clear paint protection film?
\+
Yes. Colour paint protection film is engineered to provide the same core protection as clear PPF.
The film helps protect the paint from stone chips, light scratches, swirl marks, and road debris while maintaining durability for everyday driving conditions.
Arlon Colour Protection Film also includes self-healing technology, allowing minor surface scratches to fade when exposed to heat such as sunlight or a heat gun.
Does colour paint protection film permanently change the original paint?
\+
No. Colour paint protection film is fully reversible.
The film sits on top of the paint and does not permanently alter the original finish. When removed correctly, the paint underneath remains unchanged. This allows vehicle owners to change the appearance of their vehicle while preserving the original factory paint.
How long does colour paint protection film last?
\+
Arlon Colour Protection Film offers **up to 5 years of outdoor durability** when properly installed and maintained.
The film is engineered with UV-resistant pigments and protective coatings that help maintain colour vibrancy while resisting yellowing and environmental exposure.
Regular washing and proper maintenance help preserve both the appearance and protective performance of the film.
Can colour paint protection film be installed on a full vehicle or selected panels?
\+
Yes. The film can be installed on the full vehicle or on selected panels only, depending on the customer’s preference. Full vehicle installation provides a complete colour change with paint protection across the entire surface. Partial installation covers high-impact areas such as the bonnet, roof, mirrors, or accent panels. A certified installer can recommend the best approach based on the vehicle and the result the customer wants to achieve.
How do you maintain and remove colour paint protection film?
\+
Maintaining colour paint protection film is the same as maintaining clear paint protection film.
Recommended care includes:
- Washing regularly with automotive shampoo
- Avoiding abrasive brushes or harsh chemicals
- Drying with clean microfiber towels
When professionally removed using proper techniques, colour paint protection film can be safely taken off without damaging the original paint.
How is colour paint protection film installed?
\+
Arlon Colour Protection Film features a pressure-activated adhesive and is installed using Wet Hybrid Installation.
On large, flat panels such as bonnets, roofs, and full side sections, Wet Hybrid Installation uses a light mist of water on the vehicle surface before laying the film. No shampoo is required. The water allows the film to be repositioned before it is pressed into place.
On smaller or curved areas such as mirrors, handles, and antennas, Wet Hybrid Installation can also be used with a small amount of water, or the film can be applied dry. The shape of these parts helps the adhesive bond quickly and evenly.
Contact lines that appear during installation are normal. They are caused by pressure and will fade naturally over time. Glue lines are different and permanent; they occur when the application process is interrupted, which is why maintaining consistent pressure throughout installation is important.
Professional installation is recommended for the best result and is required to maintain warranty coverage.
